About This MicroSim¶
The learner will prioritize six SDLC initiatives for each of six one-time budgets by selecting the set that the rule "fund in payback order, skipping any initiative that does not fit the remaining budget" produces. Evaluate-level work ranks options against a criterion under a constraint. Skipping an initiative that does not fit while still funding a later one is the part that requires judgement, and the tied-out budgets expose it.
This MicroSim belongs to the chapter SDLC Productivity, Risk, and Cost Roadmapping. It uses JavaScript with the shared quiz kit in sims/shared-libs/. All data in it is illustrative.
How to Use¶
- Read the case and commit an answer before any result is shown.
- Press Check (or Commit). The sim shows whether the answer is correct and explains why.
- A wrong answer gets one more attempt; after the second miss the answer is shown.
- After the last item an exploration panel unlocks. It is practice only and is not scored.

Lesson Plan¶
Audience¶
Professionals and graduate students learning to estimate and defend the cost and return of generative AI.
Duration¶
10-15 minutes
Bloom's Taxonomy¶
Evaluate (prioritize)
Prerequisites¶
SDLC cost reduction roadmap, payback, one-time cost, quarterly net saving
Activities¶
- Predict (5-10 min): work through the committed challenges before any answer is revealed.
- Explore (5 min): use the controls unlocked after the last challenge to see how each input changes the result.
Assessment¶
For each of six budgets the learner selects the initiatives to fund and commits before the answer is shown. A selection is correct when it equals the "Funded set" in Content exactly. Mastery is 5 of 6 budgets correct on the first attempt. Exploration is not evidence.
Common Misconceptions¶
(1) The largest saving should always be funded first. (2) An unfunded initiative always blocks later ones. (3) A larger budget only adds initiatives at the end of the list.
