Cost Concept Classifier

Run the Cost Concept Classifier MicroSim Fullscreen

About This MicroSim

The learner will classify each of eight spending descriptions as capital expenditure, operating expenditure, sunk cost, or opportunity cost. Understand-level classification means assigning each case to a concept by its defining feature; the feedback names that feature for every wrong placement.

This MicroSim belongs to the chapter Core Financial Roi Vocabulary. It uses JavaScript with the shared quiz kit in sims/shared-libs/.

How to Use

  1. The learner reads each card and places it in a bin.
  2. After all eight are placed, the learner presses Commit.
  3. The sim marks each card correct or incorrect and shows the "Why" text for each incorrect card.
  4. One optional retry returns incorrect cards to the pool; it does not count toward mastery.

Lesson Plan

Audience

Professionals and graduate students learning to estimate and defend the cost and return of generative AI.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Bloom's Taxonomy

Understand (classify)

Prerequisites

capital expenditure, operating expenditure, sunk cost, opportunity cost

Activities

  1. Predict (5-10 min): work through the committed challenges before any answer is revealed.
  2. Explore (5 min): use the sliders unlocked after the last challenge to see how each input changes the result.

Assessment

The learner places each of eight cards in one of four bins and commits. A placement is correct when it matches the "Correct bin" column. Mastery is 7 of 8 correct on the first attempt.

Common Misconceptions

(1) A large payment is always capital expenditure. (2) Money already spent should count in a continue-or-stop decision. (3) Opportunity cost is a cash payment.
